The only solution for long distance rides
I wanted to be able to power my phone when on long rides, both for GPS and to have a phone always available.
At first I attempted to use a bottle dynamo, but the extra drag it generated and the meagre power supply soon saw that consigned to the dustbin. A hub dynamo solution is more expensive (bear in mind that you'll need an adapter to get power from the hub to the device - I use a Busch & Müller E-WERK) but it's the only thing that's actually going to work if you're going on a long (multi-hour / day) ride.
Satisfaction straight away. No noticeable drag. Steady charge. If I kept the phone display off except when I needed it I was able to get through an entire day only losing a couple of % on the battery meter.
