A must for serious cyclists
I've been on a health kick for most of this year - losing weight, going to the gym and feeling much better for it.

To keep it going I bought a road bike a couple of months ago and the advice I received from other people was that a set of clipless pedals was one of the best upgrades I could make. I got a set of these as a present and after some fiddling about setting them up I am extremely pleased with them.

First of all some words of caution:

If you are new to being clipped on to your pedals spend a bit of time setting them up properly. Despite cycling being a no-impact pursuit there is still the possibility of joint damage to knees and ankles if you don't get it right. As you are fixed to the bike you don't have the freedom of movement you have with traditional pedals, so especially if you are doing long periods on the bike you need to make sure your positioning is good. There are some instructions with them, but I found a cycling magazine article...

Although I prefer to cycle clipped in if possible, there are plenty of occasions when I just want to hop on and go, without having to change my shoes. The only solution for long distance rides
I wanted to be able to power my phone when on long rides, both for GPS and to have a phone always available.

At first I attempted to use a bottle dynamo, but the extra drag it generated and the meagre power supply soon saw that consigned to the dustbin. A hub dynamo solution is more expensive (bear in mind that you'll need an adapter to get power from the hub to the device - I use a Busch & Müller E-WERK) but it's the only thing that's actually going to work if you're going on a long (multi-hour / day) ride.

Satisfaction straight away. No noticeable drag. Steady charge. If I kept the phone display off except when I needed it I was able to get through an entire day only losing a couple of % on the battery meter. I left the phone running at full brightness with GPS running (and maps, so pulling data too) and would have got 6 - 8 hours of life out of it.
